Radon is a radioactive gas from uranium breaking down in soil and rock. It comes into basements through cracks, sumps, floor drains and gaps around pipes. You cannot see it or smell it. Health Canada calls it the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.
Ottawa is one of the higher-radon areas in the country. In the Cross-Canada Radon Survey, just over 1 in 6 homes in Ottawa–Gatineau (17%) tested at or above the 200 Bq/m³ guideline, against about 1 in 8 across Ontario. Your neighbour's result does not predict yours. Only a test does.
