Radon in Ottawa homes

Radon is a radioactive gas from uranium breaking down in soil and rock. It comes into basements through cracks, sumps, floor drains and gaps around pipes. You cannot see it or smell it. Health Canada calls it the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.

Ottawa is one of the higher-radon areas in the country. In the Cross-Canada Radon Survey, just over 1 in 6 homes in Ottawa–Gatineau (17%) tested at or above the 200 Bq/m³ guideline, against about 1 in 8 across Ontario. Your neighbour's result does not predict yours. Only a test does.

If your result is high, the fix is well understood. A sub-slab depressurization system with a quiet fan usually brings levels well below the guideline, and the job takes about a day. November is Radon Action Month, and the heating season is the right time to test.
